Freedom, WY & ID

Freedom, Wyoming, is literally a border town – one side of the street is northeastern Caribou County, Idaho, and the other side is northwestern Lincoln County, Wyoming. This border town got its name from the freedom it gave early Mormon polygamists from having to outrun Idaho law. All they had to do was to walk across the street and they would be in another jurisdiction. Established in 1879, this is the oldest settlement in Star Valley.Â
The current population in Freedom is roughly 100 residents. At one time, it was Star Valley’s largest settlement. Today some of the old buildings, including a general store, gas station, and billiard hall, still stand, but the post office, baseball park, and LDS Church (built in 1889) are among the few still in use. Freedom is also home to Freedom Arms, the gun factory that made the famous .454 Casull handgun.
