Afton, WY
Afton is a town in Lincoln County, Wyoming, located in beautiful Star Valley at an elevation of 6,239′. Afton is home to the world’s largest elk horn arch. Spanning 75 feet (23 m) across the four lanes of US Highway 89, the arch consists of over 3,000 elk antlers and weighs 15 tons.
Afton is centrally located in Star Valley at the mouth of Swift Creek Canyon. It was the gentle murmuring of Swift Creek that reminded Scotland native William Budge of a stream from his homeland. Budge suggested the town be named Afton after the Scottish stream by that name.
An intermittent spring, located 5 miles east of Afton, is just a short hike from the end of Swift Creek Road. The world’s largest cold water geyser, the spring discharges up to 285 gallons per second. During the spring, the flow never stops because of increased water supply from the melting snowpack. Due to the flow of water from the snow, Afton was awarded “Best Water in the Nation” in 2005.
There are several museums in Afton: Pioneer and Lander Trail Museums, which tell the story of the first Native Americans and Fur Trappers who first inhabited Afton; Call Air Museum, a jump back in time that tells the history of early aviation in Western Wyoming; and Aviat Aircraft Museum.
